EISEF

On Saturday, March 18, 45 Central Lee Middle School students and 11 High School students participated in the Eastern Iowa Science and Engineering Fair in Cedar Rapids.

Alicia Schiller Haynes served as high school science fair sponsor, while Amanda Schiller, Jansen Menke, and Nadine Weirather were middle school sponsors. Central Lee students competed against 19 schools and 156 projects, earning various awards and prizes that included top-five overall project awards.

The senior champions include Jacob Hohl (senior), Everlee Harvey (senior), and Sidney Gruntmeir (junior), who were awarded a trip to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Dallas, Texas, May 14-19.

In addition, Hohl, Harvey, and Gruntmeir earned the $100 Class I Senior prize. Hohl also earned the 7 Year Award of $50, the NASA Earth System Science Award, and the Stockholm Junior Water Prize Outstanding Achievement. Gruntmeir received the $50 6 Year Award.

The junior champions from Central Lee Middle School were Addison Hohl and Caedon Newton, both seventh graders. Hohl and Newton took home the Class I JB prize of $50 and a trip to Dallas to observe the ISEF.

Addison Hohl also earned the 1st Place Occupational and Environmental Health Student Association T-shirt Thermo Fisher Junior Innovators Challenge. Newton won the Cedar Valley Amateur Radio Club/Collins Amateur Radio Club, Lemelson Early Inventor Prize, Thermo Fisher Junior Innovators Challenge, and the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Naval Science Award.

“Science fair is one of the greatest things I have ever been involved in,” said Harvey. “Being selected for this is such a great honor, and I could not have done it without my amazing teacher, Mrs. Schiller. Science fair has brought me many connections and has also grown my intrapersonal skills!”

“Science fair the past two years has given me many opportunities and experiences that I will forever use in my lifetime,” said Addison Hohl. “I was thrilled to have earned grand champion in my category and be invited to ISEF. I am so excited to attend and continue my science fair years.”

“The amount of time, work, and effort that students put into each and every one of their projects is incredible,” said Menke. “All the science fair sponsors are so proud of every single student from Central Lee for getting out of their comfort zone. Because of these fairs, students earn so many other opportunities, and many students go on past high school to work in a scientific field of study.”

In total, 21 CLMS students took home over 30 awards, while 10 CLHS students earned 17 awards.
