Central Lee Elementary School is enhancing its specials rotation this school year with the introduction of a Computer Science curriculum.
This addition reflects the school’s commitment to equipping students with 21st-century skills and preparing them for success in an increasingly digital world.
Led by teacher librarian Mrs. Katie Koller, the program will provide students with hands-on experience in coding, problem-solving, and digital literacy. Using iPads and a variety of interactive apps such as Kodable, Robo Wunderkind, PebbleGo, Google Slides, Keynote, and Freeform, students will explore key computer science concepts in an engaging and age-appropriate manner. The curriculum aligns with the Iowa Computer Science Standards, ensuring a strong foundation in computational thinking.
“Introducing Computer Science to our specials rotation is a significant step forward in our mission to provide a well-rounded education,” said Heather Fuger, Central Lee Elementary Principal. “This program not only aligns with state standards but also introduces our students to the tools and thinking processes needed in a technology-driven world.”
In addition to Computer Science, Central Lee Elementary continues to offer robust specials programming in Music, Art, and Physical Education (PE). The music program, led by Mrs. Heather Madsen, engages students in rhythm, melody, and performance while meeting state music standards. In art, Mrs. Ann Canida encourages creativity and self-expression, with students using Artsonia to create digital portfolios of their work from kindergarten through sixth grade. Miss Jessi Heavin leads the PE program, focusing on physical fitness, teamwork, and motor skill development to promote lifelong healthy habits.
Collaboration across specials enhances student learning. Music and PE lessons incorporate activities like cup stacking and rhythm sticks to develop coordination, timing, and teamwork. Additionally, all specials teachers integrate the school’s Leader in Me framework into their instruction. By embedding The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People® into their lessons, they help students develop leadership, personal responsibility, and collaboration skills that extend beyond the classroom. These principles are reinforced in daily routines and activities, empowering students to take initiative, set goals, and work effectively with others.
With the addition of Computer Science to the specials rotation and the enhancement of Music, Art, and PE programs, Central Lee Elementary continues to ensure students have access to diverse and enriching learning opportunities.
