First Grade
We are learning to be “KIND in Candyland” this year as we practice being HAWKS who Shine Bright Together! Our first graders are learning about the 7 Habits, which help them become leaders for themselves and others.
We have added iReady Reading and Magnetic Reading Foundations to our reading program this year. We begin with whole-group phonics and reading lessons before moving into small-group instruction. While teachers meet with individual students or small groups, the other students work independently on tasks such as writing, working with words, and their iReady lessons. In December, students completed their iReady Reading diagnostic and are now working on lessons tailored to their reading needs.
This is our seventh year using our math series, Ready Math. Students have been taught multiple strategies to become problem solvers and critical thinkers. Ready Math also includes a technology component that helps students practice their skills on individualized learning paths. In December, we completed our second diagnostic, and students are now focusing on lessons that address their specific needs.
During our iReady Reading time, students are working on writing in response to reading. Some of the skills we’ve focused on while reading include identifying characters, setting, feeling words, key details, asking questions, retelling, determining the central message of a story, and using informational texts, to name a few. We’ve also worked on writing personal narratives, with students sharing something they did over winter break. Recently, students completed or are currently working on an animal report. After learning about ocean animals, each student chose an animal to research and then wrote a book about it. As part of the writing process, students are practicing both their handwriting and composition skills. They are learning to write complete sentences that begin with a capital letter, have proper spacing between words, and end with correct punctuation. We are very proud of their hard work and will continue to build on these skills throughout the year!
One of our social studies units focuses on community helpers. As part of this unit, we welcomed Steve Jones and Mekenzie Edwards from Pilot Grove Community Bank, who spoke to each classroom about the value of money and how to save. We greatly appreciated their time and engaging lesson!
We also had Clay and Lia visit to present a lesson on nocturnal animals. They performed a puppet show and shared information about each animal featured. Students enjoyed learning more about the animals and seeing the interesting materials they brought with them. They also returned to teach about bird beaks, setting up stations where students experimented with different items to mimic how birds use their beaks to pick up food. Students discovered that certain items were more effective depending on the object being picked up. It was a fantastic hands-on learning experience! Both of these lessons connect to our science units.
This spring, we will hatch chicks! This is always a favorite unit, and we appreciate the support from the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Office in making it a success.
