Central Lee Middle School (CLMS) is celebrating the achievements of its students in science, highlighted by its successful science fair program and strong performance on the most recent state science assessment.
CLMS has been recognized as the top-performing school at the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa (SSFTI) for multiple years, with students consistently earning top awards, scholarships, and invitations to international competitions. Their projects span a range of scientific disciplines such as environmental science, engineering, biology, and physics. A panel of judges, including local scientists, educators, and industry professionals, evaluates projects based on creativity, scientific method, and presentation quality.
At the 2024 SSTFI last April, CLMS students earned 27 first-, second-, and third-place awards, along with honorable mentions. Students are now preparing for the 2025 SSTFI, set for March 27-28 at Hilton Coliseum on the Iowa State University campus.
“We are incredibly proud of our students and their passion for scientific exploration,” Principal Kim Ensminger said. “The Science Fair gives them the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-world challenges, and their enthusiasm for discovery is inspiring.”
In addition to excelling in competitions, CLMS eighth-grade students achieved impressive results on the latest Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) for science, with 84.09% meeting or exceeding proficiency levels—well above the state average of 61.55%.
“Our students’ success on the state science assessment is a testament to their hard work, the dedication of our teachers, and the strength of our STEM curriculum,” said Amanda Myhre, eighth-grade science teacher. “We strive to cultivate critical thinking and a lifelong love of learning in our students, and these achievements demonstrate that we are on the right path.”
Central Lee Middle School remains committed to providing hands-on learning experiences and fostering academic excellence in science education.
