First Grade

In first grade, we are learning to be “KIND in Candyland” this year as we practice being HAWKS who SOAR as Leaders! Our first graders are learning about the 7 Habits to help them become leaders to themselves and with others.

We have implemented a Daily 5 literacy routine (Read to Self, Work on Writing, Listen to Reading, and Word Work). While students work on these four independent tasks, teachers meet with individuals or groups of students.

This is also our fifth year of our math series, Ready Math. So far this year, students have learned multiple strategies to become problem solvers and critical thinkers. Ready Math includes a technology component, which allows students to practice new skills on their individual learning path.

During our writing block, we have worked on writing an opinion piece that includes stating one’s opinion, giving a reason for that opinion, then providing closure to our writing. Students will be bringing these writing pieces home to share if they haven’t already! Currently, students are working on personal narrative writing, and they are enjoying choosing a topic about something from their lives.

We are excited to help our first graders reach their potential and become eager learners. Thanks for all your support of your student’s learning at home!
