CTE - Business Classes
We have had a successful start to the year in the business classes here at Central Lee. In Accounting I, students have learned basic accounting principles and have been working on applying them to a service business, Delgado Web Services. Students have also learned how to analyze transactions into debit and credit parts, record into a General Journal, post to a General Ledger, control cash, prepare a worksheet, and develop an Income Statement and Balance Sheet. Our classes worked through an Accounting Simulation for red carpet events, allowing them to experience the entire accounting process and deepen their understanding of accounting concepts. To conclude the simulation, students completed an audit test, similar to one an actual auditor would complete — another real-life connection. By extending their higher-order thinking skills, students recognized positive elements of the simulation as well as areas for improvement.
Winning the Money Game I is a financial literacy course. I am always very excited and passionate about teaching this class and helping students become financially successful. The course is now required for graduation for all students. We cover topics from saving to budgeting, debt, credit, identity theft, life after high school, consumer awareness, bargain shopping, investing, retirement, insurance, careers, taxes, and giving. This well-rounded curriculum provides students with the foundation to “Win the Money Game” throughout their lifetime. Between financial experts Adam Carroll and Dave Ramsey, a very robust curriculum from UNI, and myself, we teach students how to be financially successful, how to become millionaires, and a lot about life along the way.
In addition, Winning the Money Game I is now available for college credit. Students have the opportunity to take a summative exam from the University of Northern Iowa at the end of the course, and those who score above a certain threshold will garner 3 transferrable university credits towards college requirements.
Intro to Business Through Sports Marketing has adopted a new name in order to entice more students into the course. The curriculum remains the same, but now has a new and improved look. Students are exposed to various aspects of sports through the eyes of a sports team; they select different sports teams to learn from and follow through the course of the activities.
The Entrepreneurship course has drawn many students to my classroom. It is a business elective open to all students, and includes topics such as how to start a business, the characteristics of a ‘good’ and ‘bad’ businessperson, how to start your own franchise, and how to branch off on your own. By the end of the course, students are able to assess whether or not they will make a successful entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship is a great course for those interested in entering the business world.
