On February 24th, Central Lee Middle School had 52 students, with 40 projects, competing at the Culver Stockton College Science Fair in Canton, MO. Students competed against 6 other schools.
Between the 10 different categories at the fair, Central Lee had 8 student projects in 3rd place, 5 student projects in 2nd place, and 4 student projects in 1st place. The first place winners in their categories were Owen Burgess, Addison Hohl, Mckenna Fransk & Madelyn Kieler, and Arabell McDowell.
Students have their next science fair at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington on March 7th to compete against other schools in the Super Conference.

Congratulations to two students from Central Lee Middle School who were recently named National Stem Challenge Champions! Addison Hohl and Caedon Newton are among 128 project finalists from across the nation who will attend the U.S. Department of Education’s first-ever National STEM Festival from April 11-13 in Washington, D.C.
There were 2,549 applications spanning grades six through 12 from across the United States. From that group, they narrowed down the applicants to 288 finalists. Addison and Caedon were two of the 288 finalists.
The 2024 National STEM Challenge is a competition for students in grades six through 12, presented by the U.S. Department of Education and EXPLR, an organization focused on providing middle and high school students with virtual and hands-on learning resources. The National STEM Challenge encourages students to design a STEM project using scientific methods or engineering design processes.
The Central Lee School District is proud of the four High School students that showcased their experiences in the Career and College Readiness Program at the State Capitol. They interacted with numerous legislators, school administrators, and school board members from across the state. Each one of them have tremendous stories to tell about their journey to their future career.
Landan Lowenberg and Riley Stuecker have participated in the Building Trades program all four years of high school. It has culminated with Carpentry 4 and the ground up construction of the house in Franklin. The skills they have learned in that program will be applied to their future careers and experiences.
Millie Larson shared her personal experiences of her path to become a nurse. As a part of the Career and College readiness program, she has become certified CNA, completed a job shadow in the nursing field, is currently working at a local nursing home through the Work-Based Learning program, and is on track to get her associates degree before graduating high school.
MaKayla Howard has explored several careers in her journey to a career. As a junior, she participated in a job shadow as an elementary teacher. She was uncertain that was the path she wanted to take so she started working at a nursing home her senior year first semester. Through the Work-Based Learning program, she is working as an associate in the elementary. With the experience that the school created, she has found a passion for education.

This week Central Lee High School has had 2 students representing them, and the State of Iowa at the 2024 American Junior Academy of Science Conference held in conjunction with the American Academy for the Advancement of Science Conference in Denver, Colorado. Senior Sidney Gruntmeir is the daughter of Amy and Brian Gruntmeir, and Junior Alivia Cook is the daughter of Nathan and Amy Cook. This week these 2 young researchers have had the opportunity to tour research labs at the Air Force Academy, network with scientists from around the world, and present their science research.
